Strong jet and a new thermal wave in Saturn’s equatorial stratosphere

چکیده
[1] The strong jet, with a speed between 500 and 600 m/s, is inferred in the equatorial region of Saturn by combining the nadir and limb observations of Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS) aboard the Cassini spacecraft. A similar jet was discovered on Jupiter (F. M. Flasar et al., 2004a). These discoveries raise the possibility that intense jets are common in the equatorial stratospheres of giant planets. An equatorial wave with wavenumber 9 is revealed in the stratosphere of Saturn by the CIRS high spatialresolution thermal maps. Our discussion based on the phase velocity suggests that the equatorial wave is probably a Rossby-gravity wave. The discovery of an equatorial wave in the stratosphere suggests that Saturn’s equatorial oscillations (T. Fouchet et al., 2008; G. S. Orton et al., 2008) may be driven by vertically propagating waves, the same mechanism that drives the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) on Earth. Citation: Liming, L., P. J. Gierasch, R. K. Saturn’s Stratospheric Temperature and Composition from Cassini/cirs
We present a short review of our current knowledge on Saturn’s stratospheric thermal structure and composition (hydrocarbons) based on recent Cassini/CIRS observations. Anomalies in the temperature field and in the meridional distribution of hydrocarbons hint at atmospheric dynamical phenomena at play. The two most notable features are an obseved asymmetry in the hydrocarbons distribution at hi...
متن کاملDynamics in planetary Atmospheric physics: comparative studies of equatorial superrotation for Venus, Titan, and earth
he long-standing problem of equatorial superrotation in a slowly rotating planetary atmosphere has been solved recently. This article presents a systematic, comprehensive, and analytical examination of the momentum budget that maintains stable superrotational winds in a given planetary atmosphere. After reviewing general approaches used in modeling comparative planetary atmospheres, i describe ...
متن کاملMaintenance of equatorial superrotation in the atmospheres of Venus and Titan
This paper extends Leovy’s theory on Venus’ equatorial superrotation by analytically examining additional terms in the mean zonal momentum equation that stably balances the momentum source of pumping by thermal tides. The general analytical solution is applied to the atmospheres of both Venus and Saturn’s moon Titan. The main results are: (i) Venus’ equatorial superrotation of 118m s 1 results ...
متن کاملThe Influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on the Troposphere in Winter in a Hierarchy of Models. Part I: Simplified Dry GCMs
A dry primitive equation model is used to explain how the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of the tropical stratosphere can influence the troposphere, even in the absence of tropical convection anomalies and a variable stratospheric polar vortex. QBO momentum anomalies induce a meridional circulation to maintain thermal wind balance. This circulation includes zonal wind anomalies that extend fr...
متن کاملThe Influence of the QBO on the Propagation of Equatorial Waves into the Stratosphere
The variation of stratospheric equatorial wave characteristics with the phase of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) is investigated using ECMWF Re-Analysis and NOAA outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data. The impact of the QBO phases on the upward propagation of equatorial waves is found to be consistent and significant. In the easterly phase, there is larger Kelvin wave amplitude but smaller...
